Head of Marketing (1305)

What's the role and team about?

As our Head of Marketing you'll be part of the leadership team within the Marketing & Business Development Group. Reporting to the CMO, you'll position the firm to win increasingly high quality work, setting and executing our annual marketing plan to help the firm to deliver its strategy and achieve its objectives domestically and internationally.

You'll be responsible for the efforts of four teams, ensuring the quality, consistency and effectiveness of their work:

  1. The Data, Content & Insights team, who collate, manage and use the M&BD group's data, content and insights so they inform our go to market activities and client service best practice.
  2. The Brand & Marketing Operations team, who manage the firm's brand identity and ensure the effective delivery of marketing operations to the firm and M&BD Group.
  3. The Corporate Communications team, who raise our profile and ensure that our positioning is communicated consistently across all internal and external communication channels
  4. The Marketing Planning & Campaigns team, who plan and run effective marketing activities and campaigns to win work and build our brand.

What will you actually be doing?

Working with and through the four teams described above, you will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking qualitative and quantitative market research, including our annual brand tracking, to inform our annual marketing plan, objectives and campaign briefs.
  • Ensuring that our positioning and identify is communicated consistently through distinctive messaging internally and externally. This will include working closely with colleagues in the US marketing team to ensure consistency globally.
  • Preparing our annual marketing plan, to include key objectives for the year, headline campaigns, thought leadership and projects, and the budget required to deliver the plan
  • Working with Sector Leaders and Practice Leaders to produce sector and practice marketing plans that identify who we're targeting, objectives, key opportunities, core messages and the right marketing comms channels.
  • Leading our flagship campaigns for the areas identified by you and the Board, from scoping, objective setting, agency briefing and tactical delivery.
  • Working with colleagues in the US M&BD team, plus strategic alliance firms, to bring an increasingly international outlook to our marketing efforts and identify opportunities to win more cross-border work.
  • Setting objectives and KPIs for marketing campaigns and plans, reporting on results and managing budgets throughout the year.
  • Collaborating with the New Business Development team to ensure that relevant clients, prospects and targets are included in campaigns, and that Client Partners understand the opportunities that are prioritised in our sector and practice marketing plans.
  • Managing our external PR strategy, including proactive communications for sectors, teams and offices, reactive press enquiries and crisis management.
  • Developing our website to ensure that it reflects our positioning and meets the needs of clients and prospects at each point of the finding and choosing stages of the client journey.
  • Creating and maintaining marketing materials and sales collateral, ensuring they're in line with our positioning, tone of voice and visual identity.

Why should you be excited about the role?

  • We're fully in growth mode, so you'll be working with people who have the hunger and ambition to realise the firm's potential and commit the effort and time to marketing & business development.
  • We have an extensive bank of quantitative and qualitative research from which to build marketing plans and campaigns, so everything can be led by proper market insight.
  • Our firm strategy, positioning and identity is well-defined, giving clear direction for the M&BD Group's priorities, budget and investment.
  • We're increasing the amount of collaboration with our colleagues in the US and our strategic alliances in Continental Europe and South America, giving an exciting international dimension to our work.
  • You'll have full ownership of all marketing communication channels, online and offline, so you can focus on ensuring consistency across everything we say and how we say it.
  • There's a culture of producing bold and distinctive marketing campaigns, giving you the freedom to develop briefs that stand out and challenge legal market conventions.
  • There's a hungry business development team that wants to work closely with their colleagues on the marketing side of the M&BD Group, taking the opportunities from campaigns to the clients and prospects in our sector pipelines

Who's this role right for?

To be successful in this role you'll need as a minimum:

  • An understanding of marketing foundations beyond pure communications and to be familiar with the current thinking from the likes of Ehrenberg Bass and Binet & Field, ideally with a marketing qualification.
  • Experience of working in senior B2B or professional services marketing roles, preferably in a partnership environment, and an understanding of the demands of working with multiple stakeholders.
  • An understanding of international environments and the approaches needed to win both domestic and cross-border work.
  • Experience of working across all marketing communications channels and knowledge of how they work together for maximum effectiveness.
  • Experience leading people in different offices and setting the direction for a multi-disciplinary team, bringing cohesion and consistency to the way they work.
  • Great communication skills, and the ability to speak with clarity and authority to people in different roles and different levels of seniority.
